The Pahari School flourished in the small Rajput kingdoms of the Punjab Hills (Guler, Kangra, Basohli, Chamba, Mandi, and their neighbors) roughly from the late seventeenth century through the early nineteenth. These hill-state courts patronized workshops that synthesized the precise draughtsmanship of Mughal court painting with the bold color sensibility and devotional intensity of the Rajput tradition. The incandescent orange-yellow ground here, and the treatment of the figures as flat, jewel-bright silhouettes outlined in dark ink, are hallmarks of the earlier Basohli idiom; the animated diagonal composition and the sense of physical force pressing against the picture's edges place the work within the vigorous battle-scene conventions that ateliers across the hills refined for royal patrons who commissioned illustrated manuscripts of the Devi Mahatmya, the Ramayana, and the Bhagavata Purana. Works of this type served simultaneously as objects of royal prestige and as devotional images; they were not illustrations in a merely literary sense but painted invocations of divine power. This leaf, produced in opaque watercolour on paper with fine ink outlines and possibly a thin mica wash on the ground, represents the confident, high-energy phase of hill-court production.
