Kali Attacking Nishumbha

This composition belongs to an illustrated series of the Devi Mahatmya (also known as the Durga Saptashati, the seven hundred verses in praise of the goddess) produced by an anonymous artist of the Pahari School, the cluster of hill-state courts in the Punjab Himalaya that flourished as centers of manuscript painting from the late seventeenth through the early nineteenth century. The Pahari miniature tradition, spanning courts at Basohli, Guler, Kangra, Chamba, and Mandi, developed from the bold, intense color fields of early Basohli work toward the softer, lyrical line of the Kangra manner; this composition, with its flat ground, sharp contours, and saturated primaries, retains strong affinities with the earlier, more forceful end of that continuum. The Devi Mahatmya was among the most frequently illustrated texts across Rajput and Pahari workshops, and battle scenes between the goddess and the Shumbha-Nishumbha demon brothers were a standard set-piece; what distinguishes this rendering is the lateral velocity of the composition (the entire image reads left to right like a single explosive movement) and the economy with which the anonymous painter concentrates power in Kali's radiating limbs against the flat, unpopulated sky.
