Varaha Avatar

Raja Ravi Varma painted this work during the height of his chromolithographic enterprise, when his Lonavla and later Malavli presses were producing devotional images for a mass Indian audience for the first time. Born in 1848 into the royal family of Travancore, Ravi Varma trained himself in European oil technique by studying with Dutch artist Theodor Jensen and by closely observing works in the Madras Government Museum; he was the first Indian painter to earn significant recognition in colonial exhibition circuits, winning awards at the Vienna World Exhibition of 1873 and the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The Varaha Avatar belongs to the systematic series of Puranic subjects he undertook in the 1890s, works that fused Academic Realism with the narrative traditions of the Ravi Varma Press oleograph. These images were revolutionary: they standardised the visual appearance of Hindu deities across a subcontinent of diverse regional traditions, and their distribution through affordable press prints meant that for millions of Indian households, Varma's painted faces became the canonical faces of the gods. The work sits at the intersection of anti-colonial cultural assertion and Victorian pictorial convention, a tension that has made Ravi Varma one of the most contested and celebrated figures in Indian art history.
