How to Choose

Four rules of thumb.

What designers do before they recommend a size.

01
Measure the wall

Measure the empty wall space you're working with. A good rule: artwork should take up roughly two-thirds of the available wall width above a sofa or console, with at least 8–12 inches of breathing room on each side.

02
Mark it with paper

Cut a piece of kraft paper or newspaper to the exact size of the framed piece you're considering. Tape it to the wall and live with it for a day. This is the single most useful sizing exercise we recommend.

03
Mind the eye level

The center of the piece should land at roughly 57–60 inches from the floor, the gallery standard for adult eye level. Above a sofa, leave 6–12 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame.

04
Estate is for moments

Our Estate size (~48 × 40 in) is gallery-scale. Use it where the room can carry it: a tall foyer, above a fireplace mantle with no other competing art, or as the sole anchor in a minimalist room.
