About the Artwork

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) painted this subject during the peak of his influence, when his Bombay-based press was disseminating chromolithographic prints of his canvases across the subcontinent, making images like this one among the most widely seen works of art in nineteenth-century India. Born into the royal family of Travancore, Varma trained himself in oil technique by studying visiting European painters and the academic conventions of portraiture and history painting; he then redirected that training entirely toward Hindu narrative subjects drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the Bhagavata Purana. Rama Panchayatan belongs to a series of large devotional compositions (alongside his Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Shakuntala) through which Varma effectively defined for a mass audience what the gods of the Hindu pantheon looked like in human, emotionally accessible form. Art historians working within the Bengal School and later nationalist critics took issue with Varma's Europeanized approach, but his synthesis was genuinely original: he used the tools of academic realism not to subordinate Indian subject matter to a Western gaze, but to grant it the monumental pictorial weight that salon painting commanded. The Ravi Varma Press oleographs of this composition circulated from Kerala to Bengal, and the image became a touchstone of domestic Hindu devotional practice.
