The Goddess Kali

The Kalighat pat emerged in the first decades of the nineteenth century in the lanes surrounding the Kalighat temple in Calcutta, one of the most visited Shakta pilgrimage sites in Bengal. Scroll painters, patuas, who had previously worked in the rural jute-scroll tradition migrated to the city and adapted their craft to a new clientele: pilgrims who wanted an affordable, portable devotional image to carry home. Working rapidly in watercolour on sized mill paper, these artists developed a signature visual language (broad flat colour, minimal interior modelling, sinuous but economical line) that could produce a finished sheet in minutes. The style flourished from roughly 1830 to 1930, absorbing influences from European aquatint engravings circulating in colonial Calcutta while retaining the bold contour and devotional intensity of the older pat tradition. Kali was among the most frequently depicted subjects, her iconography fixed by centuries of Shakta theology but interpreted with a directness and graphic energy that distinguished Kalighat work from the more refined court miniature traditions of the north. These sheets were collected seriously by the early twentieth century; examples are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Indian Museum in Calcutta, and the Ashmolean. The Kalighat pat is now recognised as a foundational influence on the Bengal School and, later, on modernist Indian graphic art.
