Maharana Sangram Singh II Riding a Prize Stallion

The painting was produced by an anonymous artist of the Mewar School, the royal court atelier based at Udaipur in Rajasthan, during the early eighteenth century, most likely within the reign of Maharana Sangram Singh II, who ruled the kingdom of Mewar from 1710 to 1734. Mewar had one of the longest continuous traditions of Rajput miniature painting, stretching back to the sixteenth century, and by Sangram Singh II's reign the workshop had reached a period of confident, codified splendor: compositions grew more formal, the palette more saturated, and equestrian royal portraits became a favored genre for asserting dynastic legitimacy and personal valor. The Maharana is shown not in battle but on ceremonial display, an image of sovereign power expressed through the mastery of a prize horse; this distinction between martial readiness and courtly magnificence is precisely the message such commissions were designed to project. Works from this period and atelier are held in major collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, and they have been widely studied as evidence of Mewar's political self-representation through visual art.
