About the Artwork
Created during Runciman's brief but influential career in Edinburgh, this drawing represents his pioneering approach to Romantic subject matter drawn from Shakespeare's darkest theatrical moments. Working in the 1760s when Scottish artists were beginning to assert their independence from English academic traditions, Runciman chose to explore the psychological terror of the weird sisters rather than their theatrical spectacle. His technique of layering transparent washes over linear drawing reflects his study of Italian masters during his Roman sojourn, yet the emotional intensity and supernatural subject matter anticipates the full flowering of Romanticism that would emerge decades later. This work stands as one of the earliest Scottish interpretations of Shakespearean themes, predating Henry Fuseli's more famous supernatural compositions.
