About the Artwork
Stuart began this portrait during Washington's final presidential term, intending it as the definitive image of the nation's founding leader for posterity. The artist famously never completed the original canvas, keeping it in his studio as a template for the numerous replicas commissioned by prominent Americans seeking their own Washington portrait. This Neoclassical composition became the template for Washington's image on the dollar bill and established Stuart's reputation as the foremost portraitist of the early Republic. The painting represents Stuart's mature period following his return from London, where he had absorbed the grand manner techniques of Reynolds and Gainsborough, adapting them to create a distinctly American approach to presidential portraiture that would influence generations of portrait painters.
