View of the Tiber Near Perugia
About the Artwork
Inness painted this work during his second extended stay in Italy, a period he described as transformative for his understanding of landscape as a vehicle for inner experience. By 1874 he had moved decisively away from the tight topographical precision of the Hudson River School tradition in which he had been trained, and was developing the atmospheric synthesis that would eventually define his mature Tonalist practice. Italy offered him the particular quality of Mediterranean light, ancient agricultural land, and a long tradition of landscape painting against which to test his own ideas. Luminism and the example of Corot were both present to him here, yet the painting resists easy categorization: it has the grandeur of the Italian Romantic landscape tradition and the intimacy of observed experience simultaneously. The Tiber Valley subject was a common destination for painters seeking the classical pastoral ideal, but Inness was less interested in archaeological sentiment than in the way light unifies a scene into a single emotional key. This canvas is a pivotal document in the transition between his early, more structured work and the dissolved, meditative landscapes of his final American decades.
