Lake Albano Sunset
About the Artwork
Inness painted this canvas during his extended Italian sojourn of 1870 to 1874, a period that transformed his practice from the precise topographic tradition of the Hudson River School toward something altogether more inward and atmospheric. Lake Albano, the ancient crater lake in the Castelli Romani south of Rome, had long drawn painters seeking the quality of its reflected light; Claude Lorrain had painted from its shores two centuries earlier, and the site carried a weight of pictorial history that Inness was fully aware of and deliberately responding to. Yet where his predecessors built the lake's majesty through architectural clarity and theatrical staffage, Inness dissolved it. Under the influence of the Swedish philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg, whose theology of a spiritually animated natural world Inness embraced in these years, the painting's soft dissolution of form was never merely a stylistic choice; it was a conviction that the visible world was the outward face of an invisible spiritual reality. Critics of the day recognized the shift: the New York collector and critic James Jackson Jarves singled out Inness's Italian canvases as evidence of a new American painterly maturity, one that had absorbed the lessons of Barbizon tonal painting without surrendering an American sense of light. The painting has been held in major American collections and stands as a key transitional work between Inness's early Hudson River manner and the fully resolved Tonalism of his final decades.
