About the Artwork
Created during the height of America's agricultural expansion in 1875, The Wheat Field captures Inness at a pivotal moment when he was synthesizing European Barbizon School influences with distinctly American subject matter. The painting reflects his growing interest in Swedenborgian philosophy, which emphasized the spiritual correspondence between natural phenomena and divine truth; here, the contrast between the threatening storm clouds and the peaceful harvest scene below suggests themes of divine providence and human perseverance. Inness had recently returned from his second European sojourn, and this work demonstrates how he applied the tonal harmonies and atmospheric effects he had absorbed from French masters like Corot and Rousseau to the American pastoral landscape, creating a uniquely American form of tonalism that would influence generations of landscape painters.
