About the Artwork
Painted during Inness's pivotal decade of the 1860s, this work represents his philosophical shift toward Swedenborgianism and its belief in nature as divine correspondence rather than mere topographical record. Following his second return from France where he studied Barbizon School techniques, Inness was developing his signature approach of suggesting rather than describing landscape; In The Woods exemplifies this evolution with its emphasis on mood over literal representation. The painting emerged during America's Civil War period when Inness sought refuge in pastoral themes that offered spiritual solace, positioning this forest interior as both physical retreat and metaphysical sanctuary that would influence a generation of American landscape painters seeking alternatives to documentary realism.
