The Storm
About the Artwork
Painted in 1885, during the final decade of Inness's career, The Storm belongs to a body of work in which the artist moved decisively away from Hudson River School precision toward the dissolved, spiritually charged atmosphere that critics would later call Tonalism. By the 1880s, Inness had been deeply influenced by the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, who held that the visible world is a continuous correspondence of the divine, and this belief shaped his insistence that landscape painting should convey feeling rather than fact. Works from this period were exhibited widely in New York and admired for their emotional intensity even by critics who found their looseness unsettling. Inness had worked in Medfield, Massachusetts, and later in Montclair, New Jersey, and the New England pastoral, with its modest farms and threatening skies, became a recurring vehicle for his ideas about nature and the interior life. The Storm is among the most direct expressions of that vision: a landscape that is simultaneously observed and felt.
