Sunset in the Woods
About the Artwork
Inness painted Sunset in the Woods in the final decade of his life, a period during which he had wholly abandoned the panoramic Hudson River ambitions of his earlier career in favour of intimate, dissolved, near-monochrome landscapes that spoke more to atmosphere than to topography. By the late 1880s and early 1890s, Inness was living and working in Montclair, New Jersey, and his philosophical absorption in the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg had deepened his conviction that landscape painting should evoke an inner, spiritual resonance rather than document an outer, measurable world. Critics who had once praised his technical precision now recognised something harder to name: a willingness to let the forest become feeling. His late works influenced Thomas Dewing and Dwight William Tryon, and they are credited with establishing Tonalism as a distinctly American mode. Sunset in the Woods belongs to the core of that achievement, its quiet authority resting not on dramatic incident but on the relentless precision with which Inness has calibrated every value from the deepest shadow to the warmest gleam of backlit bark.
