Stream in the Mountains
About the Artwork
Inness painted this work during his productive middle period, after returning from a formative stay in Italy and France in the late 1850s, where he absorbed the lessons of the Barbizon School, particularly the tonal unity of Corot and the earthy spontaneity of Théodore Rousseau. By the mid-1860s he was consciously pushing American landscape painting away from the panoramic spectacle of his contemporaries toward something more intimate and inwardly felt. Critics of the period noted this as a deliberate departure: where Frederic Church or Albert Bierstadt staged nature for sublime effect, Inness sought a communion between the painter's emotional state and the particular character of a place. The dense canopy, the modest scale of the stream, and the solitary deer together embody that ambition. Inness would move further toward dissolved, near-monochrome Tonalism in his final decades, and this painting sits at the hinge point between his Barbizon-influenced realism and the more transcendent atmospheric work to come.
