Looking Over the River
About the Artwork
Inness painted this canvas in 1886, a period when his work was moving decisively toward the meditative atmospheric mode that critics would later call Tonalism. Having spent formative years studying the Barbizon School painters in France, particularly Corot and Rousseau, Inness returned to America with an abiding conviction that landscape could carry spiritual weight without resorting to anecdote or dramatic weather. By the mid-1880s, influenced by the Swedenborgian theology he had embraced in the 1860s, he was distilling his compositions to their essential tonal key, suppressing local colour and sharp edges in favour of a unified atmospheric envelope. Looking Over the River exemplifies that late manner: the valley does not perform grandeur, it breathes. The painting belongs to a sequence of New Jersey and New England landscapes in which Inness treated familiar pastoral territory as a field for interior experience rather than topographic record, a practice that placed him in direct contrast to the panoramic ambitions of the Hudson River School painters who had dominated American landscape in the generation before him.
