Landscape With Farmhouse - George Inness, 1872
About the Artwork
Inness painted intensively through the 1870s after his return from a formative Italian sojourn, and this work sits at a pivotal moment in his development. Earlier in his career he had worked closely within the tradition of the Hudson River School, prizing topographic fidelity and panoramic grandeur. By the early 1870s he was moving deliberately away from those conventions toward a more personal synthesis rooted in the landscape philosophy of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose writings convinced Inness that outward nature was a veil over an inward spiritual order. The farmhouse and the tree are not picturesque incidents; they are presences within a landscape that aspires to mood over description. Art historians have situated this transitional body of work between the structural clarity of his earlier Hudson River compositions and the near-dissolved Tonalism of his final decade in Montclair, New Jersey. Inness was recognised during his lifetime as the preeminent American landscape painter of his generation, and works from this period are held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
