Landscape With Cattle
About the Artwork
By the mid-1870s, George Inness had moved decisively beyond the tight documentation of the Hudson River School that had framed his early career and was developing the atmospheric, spiritually inflected approach that would define his mature work. Shaped in part by his exposure to the Barbizon School painters during time spent in France and Italy, and by his deepening commitment to the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, Inness began to treat the landscape as a carrier of inner states rather than an inventory of natural facts. In paintings from this period, topography yields to mood: the specific gives way to the felt. Landscape With Cattle sits at exactly that transition point, its pastoral subject handled with a warmth and psychological ease that separates it from the grandiose sublime of his contemporaries Bierstadt and Church. It anticipates the full dissolution of Tonalism that would characterise his final decade, while retaining enough structural clarity to read as a composed, inhabited countryside. Works from this phase of Inness's career are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and they are widely regarded as among the most accomplished American landscapes of the 19th century.
