Landscape
About the Artwork
This work dates to the late 1880s, a period when Inness had relocated to Montclair, New Jersey, and was deepening his engagement with the spiritual philosophy of Emanuel Swedenborg. He had long since outgrown his early debts to the Hudson River School, moving toward what critics would come to call Tonalism, though a canvas as chromatically rich as this one sits on the threshold between that dissolved, near-monochrome mode and the fuller-voiced Barbizon-inflected painting of his middle years. The autumn subject was a recurring preoccupation for Inness, who regarded seasonal change as a visual analogue for spiritual transition rather than a merely picturesque motif. Works from this period were eagerly collected by American patrons and regularly exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the American Art Association, cementing his reputation as the foremost American landscapist of his generation. The painting exemplifies his belief that a landscape should communicate an interior state rather than simply record topography.
