Home at Montclair
About the Artwork
By the early 1890s, Inness had settled permanently in Montclair, New Jersey, and the town's winter fields became a recurring subject in what critics now recognize as his most fully realized late phase. This picture dates to a period when Inness had moved decisively away from the precise, topographically faithful landscapes of his earlier career toward a mode critics would retrospectively call Tonalism: a near-monochrome orchestration of a single atmospheric key, edges dissolved into the prevailing light, with no anecdote or incident to anchor the viewer's attention. The influence of the Swedish Swedenborgian theology Inness practiced is legible here: he believed the natural world was a continuous expression of the divine, and a painting of it should convey spiritual resonance before it conveyed geography. Home at Montclair was painted during the final decade of his life, a period of remarkable productivity in which he produced dozens of such atmospheric studies, and it stands among the most coherent examples of his mature convictions. The painting belongs to a tradition of American landscape art that was then diverging sharply from the panoramic ambitions of the Hudson River School, replacing spectacle with interiority.
