Harvest Time
About the Artwork
Inness painted this work in the early 1890s, the final decade of his life and the period in which his art moved most decisively away from the crisp Hudson River topography he had practiced in the 1850s. By this point he had absorbed the lessons of the Barbizon school during his Italian and French residencies, and had become a committed follower of the Swedish theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, whose ideas about the spiritual correspondence between the natural world and interior states shaped everything Inness made after about 1875. Tonalism, the American movement with which his late work is most closely identified, grew in large part from his example: dissolved edges, a governing tonal key, and landscape drained of narrative in favor of felt atmosphere. Works from this period entered major American collections quickly; Inness was one of the most celebrated American painters of his generation, and canvases like this one were acquired by patrons who understood them as a new kind of serious, inward landscape rather than picturesque view-making. The painting stands as evidence that American landscape art had, by the 1890s, developed a genuinely contemplative tradition independent of European precedent.
