Durham, Connecticut
About the Artwork
By the mid-1870s, George Inness had returned from his second extended stay in Europe and was consolidating a mature identity that set him apart from his contemporaries in the Hudson River School. Where Church and Bierstadt pursued the panoramic and the sublime, Inness was drawn to the inhabited, ordinary American countryside, specifically the farmed and pastured lowlands of New England and New Jersey. He had absorbed the lessons of the Barbizon School, particularly Corot and Rousseau, and was beginning the gradual shift from structured naturalism toward the Tonalist idiom that would define his late work. Durham, Connecticut sits precisely at that inflection point: the composition retains a legible structure of foreground, midground and distance, yet the handling of paint is already moving toward the dissolved, hazy unity that would characterise his final decades. Inness was also deepening his engagement with Swedenborgian philosophy at this period, which held that the natural world was a visible correspondence of spiritual states; that belief encouraged him to treat atmosphere not as a technical effect but as the true subject of a landscape. The painting belongs to a body of American pastoral views from the 1870s that demonstrate why Inness was regarded by his own generation as the leading native landscape painter of the age.
