Autumn Scene by George Inness, c. 1875
About the Artwork
George Inness painted this work during a period of profound artistic transition. Having returned from his second extended stay in Europe in the early 1870s, Inness was absorbing the influence of the Barbizon painters, particularly Corot and Rousseau, whose willingness to let mood override topographic precision gave him permission to move away from the more literal descriptiveness of the Hudson River School. The result was a body of work that American critics found difficult to categorize: too freely handled for the academicians, too poetic for the topographers. Inness himself was drawn to the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, the 18th-century theologian who held that the natural world was a living correspondence of spiritual states, and that conviction is woven into every autumn canvas he made in this decade: the landscape is never merely scenery. By the late 1870s Inness had moved fully into what is now recognized as Tonalism, dissolving form further and further into a single atmospheric key, and this painting sits precisely at that threshold, the forms still readable but the mood already sovereign. His autumn landscapes of this period were among the most sought after American paintings at auction during the Gilded Age, collected by figures such as Thomas B. Clarke, whose dispersal sale in 1899 set price records for living American artists.
