How It's Made

About the Artwork

Inness painted this work in 1862, a period of active transition in his career. He had returned from a formative stay in Italy in 1854 and was absorbing the lessons of the French Barbizon School, particularly the tonal landscape philosophy of Corot and Rousseau, whose work placed mood and atmosphere above geological specificity. By 1862 the Civil War was reshaping American life, but Inness turned instead toward pastoral tranquility, a deliberate counter-image of the rural American world as a place of continuity and quiet labor. The loose, meditative handling visible here anticipates the overtly Tonalist manner of his late career, making this painting a pivotal document: it sits at the hinge between the two phases for which he is best remembered. His contemporaries were beginning to recognize this shift; critics noted his willingness to sacrifice literal fact for emotional truth, a quality that would come to define American landscape painting in the final decades of the nineteenth century.
