Étoile du Matin (Morning Star)

Mucha produced Étoile du Matin in 1902 as one of four panels in his Les Étoiles (The Stars) series, a set of decorative prints depicting Morning Star, Evening Star, Moon, and North Star. By this date Mucha had already transformed European poster art with the celebrated Sarah Bernhardt commissions of the 1890s and had arrived at the fully developed visual language now called Art nouveau: the whiplash organic contour, the decorative enclosing border, the female figure as axis of the whole design, and the flattened spatial field that owed as much to Japanese woodblock prints as to any Western precedent. The Les Étoiles panels were conceived not as advertising but as autonomous decorative works intended for domestic interiors, which freed Mucha to push the allegorical dimension further than a commercial brief would allow. The series was printed in Prague and Paris and quickly found a wide audience; the four panels have since become among his most reproduced works and appear in major Mucha collections including the Mucha Museum in Prague and the Mucha Foundation archive. Within his body of work Étoile du Matin is notable for the degree to which it subordinates the figure to the abstract arc of colour: the dawn gradient is the real subject, and the woman inhabits it rather than posing before it.
