Mucha created Poetry in 1898 as one of four panels alongside Dance, Music and Painting, a suite commissioned and published as decorative prints by the Parisian firm Champenois. By this point Mucha had already transformed commercial print culture with his 1894 poster for Sarah Bernhardt's Gismonda, and the Les Arts panels consolidated his reputation as the defining voice of the Belle Epoque decorative arts revival. The series draws on a long European tradition of personifying the arts as muses while routing that tradition entirely through Art nouveau principles: flat spatial recession, organic ornamental framing, and the treatment of the female figure as both subject and compositional arabesque. Mucha was working in Paris at a time when the applied arts were staking a claim equal to painting, and these panels were conceived as objects to be lived with, printed at a scale suited to bourgeois interiors, and sold in editions that brought fine-art design to a broad public. The Les Arts series remains among the most reproduced works in his catalogue and is represented in major collections including the Mucha Museum in Prague and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
