About the Artwork
The panel belongs to Mucha's celebrated series The Seasons, first produced in 1896 as a decorative poster cycle for the Paris publisher Champenois. Mucha had arrived in Paris in 1887 and, after years of modest commercial work, vaulted to fame virtually overnight with his 1895 poster of Sarah Bernhardt in Gismonda. Champenois immediately contracted him for a sequence of decorative panels, and The Seasons was among the first to follow. The series ran to multiple editions and was reproduced widely across Europe, making it one of the defining visual programmes of the Belle Epoque transition into the new century. Winter is the compositional outlier of the four: where Spring, Summer and Autumn open into warmth and colour, Winter closes inward, pressing the figure into a compressed vertical field of cold botanical detail. Mucha's Czech national identity inflects even these Parisian commissions; his landscapes carry a central European sense of winter as genuine isolation rather than picturesque scenery. The series is held in collections worldwide and remains among the most reproduced works in the Art nouveau canon.
