Spring

Mucha completed the four-panel Les Saisons series, of which this panel is one, in 1896, during the most consequential phase of his career in Paris. He had arrived in the city from Moravia in the late 1880s, and his breakthrough came in January 1895 when he was called at short notice to produce a theatre poster for Sarah Bernhardt. The resulting work transformed the appearance of the Parisian street poster and made Mucha's name overnight. The Les Saisons decorative panels followed almost immediately, conceived as domestic panneaux décoratifs rather than advertising sheets, and they demonstrate how rapidly Mucha extended his visual vocabulary beyond the poster format. Spring encapsulates the core grammar of his style: the vertical format derived from Japanese woodblock conventions, the enclosing organic border that makes the sheet its own frame, the idealized female figure as both allegory and ornament, and the warm golden ground that reads as both sky and gilded surface. The series was reproduced widely in Europe and America and remains among the most recognizable works of the Art nouveau movement, collected by museums from Prague's Mucha Museum to the Victoria and Albert in London.
