About the Artwork
This panel belongs to Mucha's celebrated Stars series, published in 1902 as a set of four decorative lithographs: the Morning Star, the Evening Star, the North Star, and the Moon. By this point Mucha was at the apex of his Paris fame, having produced the poster for Sarah Bernhardt's Gismonda in 1894 and consolidated his reputation across a decade of commissions for theatre, publishing, and luxury goods. The Stars series was conceived as a purely aesthetic enterprise rather than a commercial advertisement, allowing Mucha to pursue the allegorical figure study freed from the constraints of a client's product. Art historians read the series as a hinge moment in his oeuvre, one where the commercial discipline of the poster and the ambitions of a painter briefly converged. The Evening Star panel in particular has been widely reproduced and collected since its first printing; its vertical format, approximately two and a half to one in proportion, was a deliberate formal choice that forces the composition into an intimate, almost architectural relationship with the space it occupies.
