Bierstadt first visited Yosemite in 1863, and the valley became the anchor of his mature career, supplying him with subjects grand enough to match his ambitions for large-scale exhibition painting. By the mid-1870s, when this work was painted, he was at the commercial and critical height of his reputation: his oversized Yosemite canvases toured East Coast cities and European capitals, drawing crowds accustomed to spectacle rather than subtlety. Mount Starr King, the rounded granite dome named for the Unitarian minister Thomas Starr King who championed Yosemite's preservation, was a recurring motif precisely because its form resisted the more conventionally sublime pointed peaks; Bierstadt's decision to push it to the right edge rather than center it shows the compositional confidence of a painter who no longer needed the easy solution. The work belongs to a period of American landscape painting in which wilderness was simultaneously a political subject, a tourist destination being shaped by the railroad, and a theological argument about providence and national destiny. Bierstadt absorbed all three readings and translated them into a vocabulary of weather, granite, and filtered light that no European academic tradition had quite produced before.
