The Matterhorn

Bierstadt made his first European grand tour in the 1850s and returned to Alpine subjects throughout his career, drawn to mountain forms that matched, in grandeur and in scale, the Rocky Mountain scenery that had made his American reputation. This picture dates to the 1870s, a period when the artist was at the height of his commercial success in the United States yet increasingly drawn back to the Swiss and Tyrolean Alps he had studied as a student in Düsseldorf. The Matterhorn carried specific resonance in that decade: Edward Whymper's first ascent in 1865 had made the peak internationally famous, and the catastrophic descent that killed four of the climbing party had transformed it into a symbol of sublime natural power. Bierstadt's Hudson River School sensibility was perfectly calibrated to that cultural moment; the tradition had always framed wilderness as simultaneously exalting and humbling, and no European peak offered a more legible emblem of those twin qualities than the Matterhorn. The painting sits within a line of large-format alpine pictures Bierstadt produced for a transatlantic market hungry for images of grandeur that no photograph of the period could fully render.
