Bierstadt painted The Emerald Pool during a period of sustained engagement with the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where he returned repeatedly in the late 1860s and early 1870s to document waterfalls, forest pools and summit light. The work belongs to the tradition of luminism that defined the mature phase of the Hudson River School, in which the handling of diffused, sourceless interior light became the true subject of the landscape. Bierstadt had already secured his reputation with the enormous panoramas of the Sierra Nevada and the Rockies, but in paintings such as this one he turned to intimate, enclosed forest spaces where light filters and concentrates rather than sweeps. The composition reflects the influence of John Frederick Kensett and Sanford Gifford in its concern for tonal gradation and reflective water surfaces, while the theatrical recession toward mist-veiled peaks is unmistakably Bierstadt's own.
