Bierstadt made multiple journeys to the Sierra Nevada and the Yosemite Valley in the 1860s and early 1870s, traveling with survey parties and returning to his New York and San Francisco studios laden with oil sketches and photographs. In the Sierras belongs to the height of his celebrity, a period when his large-format Western landscapes commanded prices that rivaled the most sought-after European salon paintings. Working within the Hudson River School tradition, Bierstadt pushed its luminism toward the theatrical: where Thomas Cole and Asher Durand observed light as atmosphere, Bierstadt treated it as spectacle, compressing the full tonal range of a mountain day into a single climactic burst. Critics of the period debated whether his effects were truthful or operatic, but collectors on both sides of the Atlantic paid fortunes for them. The painting reflects a nation still processing the scale and strangeness of its own western territory, and Bierstadt served as its most persuasive visual advocate.
