About the Artwork
Painted during Metcalf's most celebrated period as a leading figure in the American Impressionist movement, this work exemplifies his ability to capture the specific character of New England's pastoral landscape during the height of summer. Created just two years after he won the Corcoran Gallery's gold medal, June Pastoral reflects Metcalf's mature style that had evolved from his earlier Tonalist influences toward a more vibrant interpretation of seasonal light and atmosphere. The painting represents his ongoing exploration of how American light differs from the Mediterranean luminosity that influenced his French Impressionist predecessors; here, the softer, more filtered quality of northeastern summer creates an intimate, contemplative mood that became signature to the Old Lyme art colony aesthetic.
