About the Artwork
Painted during Metcalf's pivotal sojourn with the Old Lyme colony, this work represents his full embrace of American Impressionism after years of European study. The artist had recently returned from Giverny where he absorbed Monet's lessons about capturing fleeting light effects, yet here he applies those techniques to distinctly American subject matter. Gloucester's working harbor, viewed through this intimate woodland vantage, became a recurring motif as Metcalf sought to establish a native impressionist vocabulary that celebrated New England's particular quality of atmosphere and color temperature.
