About the Artwork
Painted during Metcalf's most celebrated period as a founding member of The Ten American Painters, this work exemplifies his departure from European Impressionism toward a distinctly American interpretation of landscape painting. Following his return from studying in France, Metcalf had established himself as the preeminent painter of New England's countryside, developing a style that balanced plein air immediacy with careful studio refinement. The painting reflects his deep connection to the Connecticut River Valley region, where he spent his most productive years capturing the seasonal transformations of the American Northeast; his work during this period earned him the Corcoran Gold Medal and established his reputation as America's painter of the changing seasons.
