Pond at Abramtsevo

Polenov painted this canvas during a period of concentrated creative happiness. The Abramtsevo estate, owned by the arts patron Savva Mamontov outside Moscow, was the gathering place of the Abramtsevo Colony, the circle that included Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, and Viktor Vasnetsov, and that would prove decisive for the direction of Russian art in the late nineteenth century. Polenov arrived at Abramtsevo in the early 1880s after a formative decade that included study in St. Petersburg, a Prix de Rome sojourn in Paris and Rome, and firsthand observation of the Franco-Prussian War. His Parisian years had exposed him to Barbizon naturalism and the earliest experiments of the French Impressionists, influences he translated into a distinctly Russian idiom: the mood is reflective rather than energetic, the palette cooler and more forested than anything Monet or Sisley were painting in the Seine valley at the same moment. Pond at Abramtsevo belongs to a sequence of modest-scale estate landscapes in which Polenov explored what he called the poetry of the ordinary, arguing through paint that the Russian countryside, without heroic narrative or historical backdrop, was a subject fully worthy of serious art. The work anticipates the Lyrical Realism that would flower in the next generation through Levitan and Nesterov, both of whom Polenov later taught at the Moscow School of Painting.
