About the Artwork
Polenov painted Moscow Patio in 1878, shortly after returning from travels in France and Germany where he had encountered the Barbizon painters and nascent Impressionism. The work was shown that same year at the sixth exhibition of the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), the reform-minded collective that championed accessible, socially resonant Russian subjects over academic mythologies. It was an immediate public sensation: critics praised its unsentimental warmth, and the canvas was purchased almost at once by the collector Pavel Tretyakov, in whose gallery it has remained to this day. The painting is now considered one of the defining works in the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow and a cornerstone of Russian landscape tradition. What made the picture so arresting in 1878 and what still holds the viewer now is its refusal of any picturesque contrivance: this is an ordinary backyard, painted with the same attentiveness a Dutch genre master might bring to a domestic interior, yet flooded with an outdoor light entirely Polenov's own. It marked a decisive turn in his career, establishing the lyrical, sun-saturated domestic landscape as his signature register.
