About the Artwork
Painted during Ruysch's most celebrated period as court painter to Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, this work exemplifies the height of Dutch Golden Age still life painting when such compositions commanded prices exceeding those of history paintings. At sixty-four, Ruysch had perfected her technique of layering translucent glazes to achieve the remarkable depth and luminosity visible in each grape's surface and the subtle gradations across the peach's downy skin.
