About the Artwork
Painted during Ruysch's most productive decade, this work exemplifies the sophisticated botanical knowledge that set her apart from her contemporaries in the Amsterdam art market. As daughter of anatomist Frederik Ruysch, she possessed an intimate understanding of plant structure that allowed her to render each species with scientific accuracy while maintaining the poetic sensibility that made her the highest-paid still life painter of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition reflects the influence of her teacher Otto Marseus van Schrieck, yet surpasses his work in its confident handling of light and shadow. By 1706, Ruysch commanded prices that rivaled history painters; this Flower Piece represents the culmination of techniques she had refined through decades of direct observation in her father's botanical specimens and her own garden studies.
