La Gracia

Painted in 1930, near the end of the artist's life, La Gracia belongs to the sequence of monumental figure compositions in which Julio Romero de Torres synthesised Symbolism, Academic Realism and the Andalusian regional tradition into an idiom that has no precise European parallel. De Torres spent virtually his entire career in Córdoba, where his father directed the provincial fine arts museum, and the city's layered identity, Catholic, Moorish and folk, saturated his imagination. By 1930 he had achieved international celebrity: his work had been shown at the Paris Salon, acquired by Spanish national collections and reproduced across the popular press, making his female figures among the most recognised images in early twentieth-century Spanish art. La Gracia reads simultaneously as a Pietà transposition, a secular allegory of grace and mercy, and a meditation on the female body as both sacred vessel and mortal flesh. The nuns function less as identifiable individuals than as a chorus of grief, their dark habits forming the shadowed ground against which the nude shines.
