About the Artwork
Created during Waterhouse's most prolific period, this 1891 work emerged as the artist had fully developed his signature style combining Academic technique with Pre-Raphaelite storytelling. Following his election as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1885, Waterhouse was exploring increasingly complex mythological subjects that allowed him to showcase both his technical virtuosity and his understanding of classical literature. The painting reflects the Victorian fascination with Homeric themes while demonstrating Waterhouse's unique ability to psychologically penetrate ancient narratives. Unlike his contemporaries who often idealized mythological subjects, Waterhouse emphasized the raw human struggle between reason and temptation. The work was exhibited to considerable acclaim, establishing Waterhouse as the premier interpreter of classical mythology in late Victorian art and cementing his reputation for paintings that combined scholarly accuracy with emotional intensity.
