Autumn Gold

Grimshaw painted this work during the period of his greatest commercial and critical confidence, roughly 1878 to 1885, when he had established his Leeds studio and was producing the atmospheric townscapes and country-house grounds that made his reputation. Autumn Gold belongs to a cluster of autumnal garden pictures he returned to repeatedly, finding in the leafless English country house an image of elegiac beauty that resonated with Victorian patrons who shared his taste for mood over narrative. Grimshaw had no formal Royal Academy training; he was self-taught and spent his early years resisting his parents' wish that he pursue a safer profession. By the late 1870s his method, combining the hard-edge precision of Pre-Raphaelitism with the atmospheric unity more associated with Tonalism, had become unmistakable. His nocturnal street scenes are better known today, but his daylit autumn gardens are equally accomplished demonstrations of his ability to hold a mood across an entire composition without recourse to dramatic incident.
