The title's reference to 1836 places the scene during the early years of Victoria's reign, when gas street lighting was revolutionizing nocturnal city life and transforming places like Briggate into theaters of modern urban experience. Grimshaw, working from his Knostrop Hall studio near Leeds, had intimate knowledge of this famous shopping street and its evolution from medieval marketplace to Victorian commercial hub; his Victorian nocturnes captured a specific historical moment when artificial light was creating new possibilities for nighttime social and commercial activity.
