View of Rome
About the Artwork
Jakob Alt produced this view during one of his extended Italian campaigns, the journeys to Rome and the Italian peninsula that shaped the most celebrated phase of his career. Alt had made his first Italian journey in the 1810s and returned repeatedly, finding in Rome a subject that fused his gift for exact topographic draughtsmanship with the broader Romantic fascination with Italy as a landscape of history, light and ruin. The panoramic city view from a garden terrace was a well-established genre among northern European artists working in Rome, from the vedutisti of the previous century onward, yet Alt's version belongs unmistakably to the Biedermeier tradition: domestic in scale, sober in palette, and precise in observation where earlier vedute could be theatrical or schematic. The work aligns Alt with contemporaries such as Thomas Ender and Eduard Gurk who brought Austrian draughtsmanly precision to the grand Italian subject. Alt's Roman panoramas, including this canvas, were collected by the Viennese court and by the Austrian imperial household, and they circulated widely in engraved reproduction, helping to fix the image of Rome in the bourgeois imagination of the mid-19th century.
