Religious Procession in Kursk Gubernia

Repin worked on this monumental canvas across nearly a decade, from initial studies begun in 1877 to the finished picture exhibited in 1883 at the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) traveling exhibition in St. Petersburg, the most consequential venue for socially engaged Russian art of the nineteenth century. The Peredvizhniki, also known as the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions, had positioned themselves in deliberate opposition to the academic establishment, carrying realist and socially critical art to audiences across the empire. Repin had already secured his reputation with Barge Haulers on the Volga (1873), but this procession picture is widely regarded as his most ambitious statement on the stratified nature of Russian Orthodox society. He traveled repeatedly to Kursk Gubernia to sketch the actual annual procession that carried a locally venerated icon of the Mother of God, filling notebooks with individual faces, postures, and costumes drawn from life. The result is not a devotional image but a sociological panorama: faith functions here as the organizing force of a society Repin shows as rigidly hierarchical, where proximity to the sacred object corresponds exactly to social rank, and where the desperate and the afflicted are literally beaten back from the center. The painting entered the collection of Pavel Tretyakov and remains today in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, where it is considered one of the defining works of nineteenth-century Russian painting.
