About the Artwork
Repin painted this work in 1879, a period of intense productivity that followed the critical success of Barge Haulers on the Volga (1873) and coincided with his sustained interest in the everyday life of Russian society. Having studied in St. Petersburg and spent time in Paris absorbing the lessons of the French naturalist and early Impressionist movements, Repin returned to Russia with an eye sharpened for the unpretentious poetry of ordinary moments. At the Boundary belongs to a group of outdoor figure paintings from this era in which he portrayed women and children of the educated Russian class in natural settings, images that affirmed the quiet rhythms of domestic life against the backdrop of a turbulent political decade. The painting reflects Repin's association with the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), the realist collective that rejected academic studio conventions in favor of truthful observation of Russian life. Within that context, the work occupies a gentler register than the socially charged canvases for which Repin is best remembered, demonstrating the full breadth of his observational gifts.
