Manifestation of 17 October 1905 - Ilya Repin, 1907

Repin began this painting in the immediate aftermath of the October Manifesto, completing it in 1907 while Russia was still absorbing the aftershocks of the 1905 Revolution. It was a period of acute political uncertainty: the promise of reform coexisted with continued repression, and the mood on the streets oscillated between euphoria and dread, precisely the double register Repin sustains throughout the composition. As the preeminent figure of Russian Realism, Repin had long committed his practice to chronicling Russian life without idealization, from the barge haulers of the Volga to the psychological drama of Ivan the Terrible. This painting extends that commitment into contemporary political history, treating a living public event with the same documentary seriousness he had applied to canonical historical subjects. The work belongs to a tradition of large-scale crowd paintings that includes Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, but where Delacroix allegorizes revolution, Repin insists on the particular: faces with distinct expressions, hats that identify social class, uniforms that mark institutional authority wavering at the edge of a civilian tide. The canvas was exhibited in St. Petersburg to considerable attention and is now held in the State Russian Museum, where it stands as one of the most significant visual documents of the revolutionary year 1905.
