The Night Hag Visiting Lapland Witches
To scale 31 x 26 in on the wall
Representative Hand-applied gesso embellishment
About the Artwork
Painted during the height of Fuseli's exploration of Gothic Romanticism, this 1796 work represents his fascination with Scandinavian folklore and the darker realms of human psychology. The Swiss-born artist, then at the peak of his London career, drew inspiration from Nordic mythology and contemporary interest in witchcraft narratives that captivated late eighteenth-century society. This painting exemplifies Fuseli's unique position within the Romantic movement, bridging the gap between neoclassical tradition and the emerging fascination with the sublime and supernatural that would influence later Gothic revival art. The work reflects his deep engagement with literary sources, particularly Shakespearean themes of otherworldly intervention and supernatural visitation.
